The international culinary scene is once again opening its doors to the next generation: The World’s 50 Best Restaurants has launched the application phase for the 2026 “50 Best Restaurants Scholarship”. In cooperation with Parmigiano Reggiano, the program is aimed at young chefs who are just starting their careers.

A key factor for the future of gastronomy

At the heart of the initiative is a clearly defined goal: to nurture talent early on and give them access to the world’s most renowned kitchens. Eligible applicants must be over 18 years of age with less than three years of professional experience in a professional kitchen. In 2027, the scholarship recipient will receive two four-week internships – so-called “stages” – at leading international restaurants. Applications can be submitted here until April 15, 2026.

The destinations include the legendary The Fat Duck, led by Heston Blumenthal in the UK, which has long been considered the epitome of avant-garde cuisine and was ranked number 1 on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2005, as well as the South African Salsify at the Roundhouse by Ryan Cole and Nina du Toit, currently ranked No. 88 on the expanded 2025 edition of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Both establishments exemplify distinct culinary philosophies.

Multi-stage selection process

The selection process consists of several stages: After an initial application that includes questions about the candidate’s culinary background and sources of inspiration, participants must, among other things, develop their own recipe featuring Parmigiano Reggiano and submit a video demonstrating their practical cooking skills. The three finalists will ultimately be invited to the “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” awards ceremony in November 2026, where the winner will be announced.

In addition to individual support, the scholarship also pursues a strategic industry agenda. Parmigiano Reggiano is leveraging the partnership specifically to recruit young chefs as future ambassadors for the product. At the same time, the “50 Best” organization continues to position itself as a global promoter of talent in an industry increasingly plagued by a shortage of skilled workers.

Conclusion: Talent Development as an Indispensable Building Block

Beyond the current call for applications, the program reflects a fundamental shift in the international restaurant industry: the targeted development of young talent is no longer merely an altruistic endeavor, but an indispensable building block for innovation and quality.

Top restaurants worldwide face similar challenges – increasing competitive pressure, changing working conditions, and growing demands for creativity and sustainability. Initiatives such as the “50 Best Restaurants Scholarship” serve as a bridge between training and haute cuisine. They not only create career opportunities but also ensure the industry’s long-term sustainable development.
