Before we look at other hot spots and places to be, the question arises: What does the name Las Vegas actually mean in German? The name Las Vegas comes from Spanish and means “The floodplains” or “The meadows”. The city is the cultural, infrastructural and economic center of Nevada and is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. And that’s precisely why it’s recommended to plan at least 3 days for this city. If you go on excursions or explore exciting places outside of the Strip during the day and don’t hit the Strip until the evening, you won’t be able to see all the hotels and casinos.

What do you do in Las Vegas during the day?

Some of the most popular daytime activities in Las Vegas include:

  • Hop-On Hop-Off Big Bus Tour Las Vegas
  • High Roller Ferris Wheel and Cable Car at The LINQ
  • Stratosphere Tower viewing platform
  • Hoover Dam (dam)
  • Grand Canyon
  • Buffalo Springs Reservation
  • Red Rock Canyon

And if you're looking for the best lunch spots in Las Vegas, just read on! In the second part of our series we introduce more great restaurants that you should definitely visit. From Italian delicacies at Brezza to Mediterranean delights at La Cote, here's where to have a fantastic lunch in Las Vegas.

Lunch-Spots in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, the pulsating metropolis in the middle of the Nevada desert, not only offers dazzling nightlife and glamorous shows, but also an impressive culinary diversity. In the second part of our series about the best lunch spots in Las Vegas, we will guide you to other gastronomic pearls.

Tip 1: Brezza

Founded by 2020 James Beard Award semi-finalist Nicole Brisson, Brezza Italian at Resorts World Las Vegas offers upscale, modern Italian coastal cuisine that uses seasonal ingredients of the highest quality to tantalize the palate. The restaurant, which has been awarded the "Snail of Approval" by Slow Food, places great emphasis on sustainability and sources local ingredients wherever possible to use the best seasonal produce. Brezza's accolades include the title of "Restaurant of the Year" from the Desert Companion 2022, the "Best New Restaurant" award from the National Restaurant Association and the coveted Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. The homemade pasta and varied desserts are an absolute must!

Tip 2: La Cote

La Cote is a Mediterranean restaurant in the luxurious Fontainebleau Hotel, located right by the large pool. Here you can enjoy delicious burgers, tacos and wraps in a relaxed but stylish atmosphere. After lunch, the hotel's Oasis Pool Deck invites you to relax - perfect for the high temperatures in Las Vegas. Tip: Rent a private cabana and enjoy refreshing cocktails and fresh fruit.

Tip 3: Spring Mountain Ranch

A trip to a ranch in the Nevada desert should not be missed when in Las Vegas.

What desert surrounds Las Vegas?

Las Vegas is located in the Mojave Desert, the most famous desert in the USA. Located about 15 miles west of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is easily visible from the Strip.

The sprawling and magnificent Spring Mountain Ranch State Park borders the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and has been used as a working ranch and luxury retreat by a number of glamorous owners in the past, including German actress Vera Krupp and millionaire Howard Hughes. Today, visitors can tour some of Nevada's oldest buildings, a blacksmith shop from the 1860s, the Sandstone Cabin where the founding family lived, and the ranch house. Hiking trails through the park and shaded picnic areas with tables and grills make day trips to the park a favorite family outing. In addition, the Super Summer Theater offers a series of outdoor performances each year.

Book tip of the week: Tunisian vegan

An aromatic journey through Tunisian cuisine

With “Tunisian vegan”, Malek M’hiri takes us on a colorful and aromatic journey through Tunisian cuisine – without any animal products. This book is more than just a collection of recipes: it tells the story of tradition, family and the unique flavors of Tunisia.

The 60 recipes show how diverse and creative Tunisian cuisine is, even in its plant-based form. Classics such as brightly colored shakshuka, spicy dumplings or steaming couscous become an experience through Malek’s vegan interpretations. The playful approach to ingredients and spices is particularly charming – there is less weighing up and more combining and seasoning. It is precisely this freedom that makes you want to discover the cuisine according to your own preferences.

The variety of recipes ranges from sweet Sunday breakfasts with millet pudding to hearty street food creations such as brik. Harissa, garlic and Tunisian olive oil play a central role and give the dishes their typical intensity. Malek not only conveys the recipes themselves, but also the knowledge of spices, ingredients and traditional methods of preparation.

The book’s personal touch is particularly impressive: the recipes are based on Malek’s family history and combine Jewish, Amazigh and Tunisian influences. This cultural depth makes each dish a piece of lived history that can be relived in the kitchen at home.
